2008 Grand Pacific Trapshooting Championships
On Saturday, July 26th the Grand Pacific Trapshooting Championships ended after a week, and 1,400 targets. Several Gig Harbor shooters participated in the competition, which included over 350 competitors from all the western states, including Alaska and Hawaii. The weather was generally warm and sunny, with enough wind to make target flight variable. This tournament attracts some of the best shooters in the country, hence winning scores are very impressive. Gig Harbor shooter, Mike Levanger, shot a perfect 100 x 100 in the first event; he was one of 11 perfect scores to go into a tie breaker system. Another Gig Harbor shooter, Grant Lau, shot 99 x 100, and at least was listed on the same page of the results as the 100 straights.
Other Gig Harbor shooters who competed in the tournament included Art Fenton, Tom Schmidt, Tony Tebeau, Frank Treese, Don Davies, and John Fowler. Each day the competition was completed by 4:00pm, and in the RV camp set up by the Gig Harbor group fun, food, and fellowship broke out soon after the guns were cleaned and put away.
When all 11 championship events were complete, Grant Lau emerged as Class A High Overall Champion. Tony Tebeau was 2 targets from winning the Class B High Overall trophy. A week of shooting, and 1,400 targets demands both consistency and endurance, and although neither shooter won any individual event, their scores were consistently close to the leaders in their class in every event.
In September, Gig Harbor will host a registered trap tournament. It is considered my many of the shooters the wrap up of the competitive year. We will shoot Friday through Sunday, and have fun, food, and fellowship each night. In doing so, everyone will go home a winner.

Gig Harbor Shooters on the Competitive Tour Take Trophies.
As the competitive target year reaches its height with state and regional championships in July, several Gig Harbor shooters have won on the tour so far.
Mike Levanger has won several Vets Class trophies, including a tournament at Bremerton in April, at the Inland Empire tournament, and ATA State Championships, both held at the Spokane Gun Club in May and June. Also in June, Grant Lau competed in the Hawaii State ATA Championships and returned home with six trophies. Most recently, Dave Sypher won a championship trophy at the Washington State PITA Championships held at the Evergreen Sportsman's Club in Littlerock, WA. Dave won handily in a shoot-off against two other shooters who had tying scores in the 200 target event. Dave broke 24/25 targets during the pressure filled shoot off to beat his rivals who broke 21/25, and 22/25 in front of the 100 or so onlookers.
The week of July 19th through 26th the Grand Pacific Championships will be held at ESC in Littlerock. Those competing during the entire tournament will shoot at 1,400 targets -- up to 300 in a day. Several Gig Harbor shooters will compete in all, or part of this tournament. Stay tuned for results in a couple of weeks.
